Once you have landed a scholarship and you start to fulfill your childhood dream, then you might begin to feel that school basketball is no longer sufficient to satiate your aching for the professional basketball league. If you have decided to go pro and believe that you can, then read these time-tested guidelines that will surely make you the next ‘talk of the town:
1. Be committed. Once you feel that you have the talent to become a professional basketball player, then commit yourself. Don’t chicken out at the slightest sign of obstacles (because there will be many).
2. It is imperative for you to be on top of your game at all times. Psychic yourself to be a go-getter and that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to.
3. Prepare yourself physically. In terms of endurance, if you are able to run a mile, then do two. Double your efforts and the results will be doubled as well.
4. Impress your coach. He will be able to back you up on any applications that you make. When he is assured that he has a key player on his team, he might be able to make recommendations. If not, at least the word will get around that a certain player performs each game like it is the last game of his life.
5. Professional basketball is a form of employment and, thus, a career. If you have submitted your best resumes for the college athletic scholarship, then it’s a must to submit something more than your best. Highlight the skills that make you an asset to the professional team (examples are your statistics, newspaper articles that were written about you or your team, proof of game programs, etc.). Express your desire to enter the professional league by adding a cover letter. Make sure that the complete application papers are forwarded ahead of schedule.
6. Good grades: Since professional basketball doesn’t require licensing, time and again, the importance of getting good grades is reiterated. Most professional leagues require their players to have graduated from college or be nearing graduation. Graduating students should graduate within the prescribed calendar year. If not, some leagues are able to take in high school graduates. To add to that, they not only require mere graduates but graduates who made good grades.
7. Develop a professional attitude. Learn punctuality and self-discipline in all matters. Also, know how to bridle your anger. The slightest provocation could send you home and deprive you of the chance to earn $25,000-$20 million every year. Be sure that you are emotionally mature enough to take the rigors of the job.
8. Apply as early as when you are 20 years of age. In NBA, for instance, they will require you to have graduated from high school at least two years prior to the recruitment process.
9. Prepare to be homesick. Most professional basketball players have to travel (very far away) from their home so psyche yourself to be tough in all circumstances. Success will only come to those who are willing to sacrifice something in return.
10. Get yourself an agent that will serve as your counselor. These agents will further your basketball career by helping you connect to the right people in the industry. If you are one of those players who gets called from agents without even asking for one, then you are mightily blessed.
11. Plan for your retirement. When you are retired, what will you do? You have to have a buffer career for your retirement years. If you can, establish a business and a sizeable savings. Know that there is life beyond the basketball court and that you will inevitably live that.

I have found it difficult to locate a store that has a Becky hammon jersey for either team russia or for the euroleague. I was wondering if anyone knew a website or number that I could contact a place that would be able to get me this jersey.

One of the most common sights in the US is an outdoor basketball hoop mounted on a wall next to a paved driveway, on the sidewall of a house or over the garage door. These outdoor hoops are easy to install, require little maintenance and are not in the way of people or vehicles. In contrast, portable or in-ground systems have to be set up more carefully.
Most professional quality basketball hoop, goal and flooring, everything you need to bring excitement to your gymnasium or backyard basketball court is what many people want. Every basketball hoop, goal, court flooring should be durable all weather, colorful, low maintenance and built for recreational use or aggressive basketball hoop professionals. Most manufacturers sell wall-mounted hoops as packages that comprise a backboard, rim, net, and mounting kit. Some of these outdoor hoops also have an extension arm that allows the rim and net to extend outwards. The portable hoops are equally easy to use. They need no formal installation because they come with a wheel-mounted base that can be filled with water or sand for stability What’s more they can be wheeled back into a garage after a game is over. These outdoor hoops are especially suitable for those players who play once in a while, and don’t want to block there drive ins or backyards with a basketball hoop. Those who prefer permanent structures have the option of installing in-ground systems. These outdoor hoops require more effort and time to set up, because a hole has to be dug to install the pole. According to installation kits, six 90-pound bags of cement need to be used to secure the pole. Otherwise, there is the danger of the pole coming unstuck when a player holds onto a basket during a dunk. A disadvantage of an in-ground system is that the ground has to be dug up whenever the basketball pole is to be moved. To reduce the damage, a few equipment makers sell bolt on systems. These systems bolt the basketball pole to an anchor that has been set in concrete. There are two other points that need be kept in mind while using outdoor hoops. The first is the shape the backboard. Fan-shaped backboards may look pretty but they should be avoided because it is difficult to play bank shots against such a background. The second is the backboard color. It should be opaque so that the player is able to make out the basket when playing in an outdoor environment.

My article in February, 2008, Teaching Progression Skills For 1-on-1, Part 1
(http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/1-on-1-part1), spoke to the teaching of offensive basics for balance, control, ball handling and dribbling. If the youngsters are ready, now the defensive side of the 1-on-1 equation can be introduced.
Just as with offensive skills, the defensive skills must be taught from the most basic—meaning stance, balance and movement—before introducing a dribbler into the mix. A player must understand the role of the defender as being one of containment first, learning to play between the ball and the basket, without thinking about stopping the dribbler or taking away the ball.
For both the sake of the offensive player’s newly learned dribbling skills and the defender’s newly learned defensive skills, it should be a while before the teaching-coach allows game-speed action. Let the players learn their skills and hone their skills under control and with the teaching-coach’s direction. There will be the rest of their playing careers to go at it live 1-on-1. Allow each player the opportunity to grow their skill development and understanding of the game. Be patient, coaches!
I have addressed the teaching of individual defense, starting with stance, sliding and position between the ball and the basket. My article, Why Teach Man Defense, November, 2007 (http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/
whyteachmanD), addresses the coach’s understanding of what needs to come first in the defensive teaching process. I covered the complete sequence of teaching individual defense in my articles, Teaching Individual Defense, Parts I and II, (http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/ September_2006.html and http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/October_2006.html).
The above articles about defense basically brought the defensive player up to the point of playing against a dribbler. After lots of dribbling drills and controlled dribbling vs. defense drills, the teaching-coach can begin to now introduce a little more aggressive play where pressure is put on the dribbler in an attempt to direct the dribbler where the defender wants the ball to go. This presupposes that the skill levels of the dribbler and defender are capable of this kind of drill. I address this in my November, 2006, article, Defending The Dribble Entry, (http://www.
top-basketball-coaching.com/November1_2006.html).
All of these skills–offensive and defensive–have hours devoted to them in my books (http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/EBOOKS.html), DVD and Video downloads (http://www.top-basketball-coaching.com/dvd.html). Everything I have devoted my resources to has been to have the coach become a teaching-coach of the individual skills of the game. It does no good to attempt to jump into playing the 5-on-5 game without the successful execution of individual skills requisite for playing 1-on-1, then 2-on2, etc.

The landscape of high school basketball is changing. The up and coming power is AAU basketball. Why do I say this? Because it’s true. High school basketball is not the same anymore. It use to be a big deal to play on your high school team but that time is over. AAU basketball offers more to the student athlete than just being on the high school basketball team. AAU basketball programs run like small corporations. These programs have presidents, treasurers, trainers, and many coaches. They raise money for their programs and do a great job with recruiting.
All of these programs are non-profit and bring in many donations. The part of AAU basketball that I can see that’s fun for the players is the traveling. Many of the programs are going to tournaments all over the country and players are staying at hotels, eating at good restaurants all the time and are doing things kids like to do. AAU basketball is fun and there’s more parental involvement.
The AAU players have greater advantages that high school teams don’t. During your high school season you play 20 or so games with teams in your community which means you get on the school bus and travel to another school to play. There are no hotels or places to eat after the game like you would get during the AAU season and there is no travel.
During the AAU season you have a different coach and sometimes and entirely different group of coaches. Other major advantages I see are recruiting good players to the AAU program whereas in high school, you’re stuck with the players who go to that school.
Recruiting is a big deal these days. College coaches want to see as many players in one place, at one time and you can’t really do that during the high school basketball season.
At some of the AAU events there are hundreds of teams with thousands of players. It would make sense for college recruiters to attend because it’s much easier to see all of the good players in one place. College coaches can see these players play many games during the length of a tournament and it is a great advantage to the players of these AAU basketball programs.
AAU basketball players can play 40 to 50 games and there are many other perks that go along with that such as, players receiving free shoes and new uniforms. In high school, you are stuck with same old outdated jersey that’s been worn a million times by many other players.
AAU programs also have power. When it comes to recruiting they have the most talented teams and players and college recruiters want to get to know these AAU coaches. College coaches can only get to these players by going through the AAU coaches. I’ve heard that some AAU coaches will say things like, “if you make a donation of $10,000 you can have access to my players”. Now keep in mind, this is not illegal. AAU programs are non-profit and have to raise money somehow. College programs do make these types of donations and it’s all good for everyone.
Back in the day and not that long ago, some high school coaches would try to ruin a high student athlete’s chances of getting recruited for college but with the power of AAU basketball, you can’t get over on players any more. The players now have more options and there’s nothing wrong with options.
The things that I’m hearing and seeing with AAU basketball is that some major college recruits are bypassing the high school basketball season altogether. If it’s about recruiting and being seen then all you would have to do is only play AAU basketball. By only playing AAU basketball, you can still been seen by a greater number of college coaches and I think it would be a better advantage to play AAU basketball. The only downside I can really see is if you are an average basketball player and are not on a good AAU basketball program. Then, you would need the high school basketball season.
To be recruited in high school it would help if your team played in the state tournament every year. College programs would come and see the players playing–all in one place. That still goes on but the value is not so important any more. Not every team makes it to the state tournament and good players sometimes get overlooked. But if you are lucky enough to be on a good AAU team, then you will be seen by a large number of coaches.
Think about this: some smaller college programs who don’t have the big recruiting budgets have to pick which events to attend each year. These smaller college programs must spend their money wisely so, to attend a large AAU basketball tournament would be in that college’s best interest. College programs don’t need to attend the high school basketball games anymore because they’re only going to see one good player–maybe. College coaches are funny about how they recruit players and they’re not coming just to see one player anymore. AAU basketball offers more. It’s like one-stop shopping–get it all and see it all in one place.
I don’t know if the coaching is any diffident or better with AAU basketball versus high school coaching. It may be about the same because a lot of high school coaches are AAU basketball coaches. What I do see is the AAU coaches having more time to put into their own programs and players. Also, many AAU coaches don’t have to deal with the high school BS from school administrators and athletic directors. AAU coaches can bypass many restrictions that are placed on high school coaches.
Yes, being an AAU basketball coach has its many advantages. Being an AAU coach, you can build the program how you want and pick or recruit the players you want now. High school coaches are teachers and do not have the time to fully help their own players with recruiting.
There will come a time when AAU basketball is more powerful than high school basketball. In the future, you will see more AAU basketball events on T.V. Some AAU programs will even start their own television network and maybe run their own programming on the Internet.
AAU basketball is what’s happening now! I love AAU basketball!

Since, the basketball game requires you to move vigorously, it is always a good idea as a player to invest in a reliable pair of basketball shoes. Movements such as jumping, running, shooting, blocking, and other side-to-side actions are obviously employed in the basketball game. You can’t sustain all the necessary moves when shoes easily tear away. The basketball players are nonetheless wise enough to choose a good and decent pair of basketball shoes. These pairs of basketball shoes:
Need to be enduring; Enduring shoes will not overcome only wear and tear but also it will contain more of the capacity of hindering any occurrence of injuries on the player’s lower body parts.
Need to be Comfortable; A player must be comfortable in his/her shoes as he/she executes the routines of the game. This is significant, especially that the player needs to move swiftly. Therefore any hindrance in transferring his/her body weight from one foot to another should highly avoided.
The Variety of Basketball Shoes
However, basketball players are different. They then opt for different kinds of basketball shoes. There are those power players who prefer basketball shoes with the high tops for the utmost ankle comfort and support. Meanwhile, the all-around basketball players often go for the mid-sole basketball shoes. The speedsters on the other hand most likely want the low-top and lightweight basketball shoes that provide no restriction on the ankles.
Note that basketball players who utilize plain tennis shoes when playing stand some of the dangers that come along with tennis shoes. Which include higher chances of skidding, getting injured, and being slowed down due to weakening grips.
The Makeup of Basketball Shoes
The basketball shoes are either crafted through the use of canvas, synthetic leather, or leather alone. The most popularly utilized material for the basketball shoes is the synthetic leather due to its lightweight and durability. Natural leather material is prone to stretching therefore increasing the dangers for the player. Other branded basketball shoes utilize the combined materials of natural textile or leather and the synthetic leather.
Basketball shoes manufacturers oftentimes sponsor basketball teams. The common requirement is the reliable sock liner therein. As of now, there are several varieties of basketball shoes sold on the market. But of course, the standards for the choice of basketball shoes are always set for traction, durability, style, comfort, and support. Both male and female basketball players can very well satisfy themselves with the wide array of basketball shoes on the market.

tball Basics
Below is some basic information about basketballs to give you an idea of what’s out there and why.
There are four basic materials used for basketballs.
Leather, Composite leather, Synthetic leather, and Rubber.
Leather is the best and most expensive, it is what the NBA uses for their game ball. They tried switching to the composite leather but they just didn’t like the feel so they switched back to leather.
Composite leather is the most common ball found in High School play. It is more durable and less expensive than leather.
Synthetic leather is similar to the composite leather and is also less expensive than regular leather.
Rubber is the cheapest and very durable. Rubber is the best material to be used outdoors.
There are five basketball sizes:
Official/Men’s size 29.5″ – 30″
Women’s size 28.5″ -29″
Intermediate 27.75″- 28.5″
Youth/Junior size 27.25″ – 27.75″
Mini size 22″ – 22.5″
There are two channel types:
Narrow Channel
Wide Channel
Most basketball manufacturers have moved away from the narrow channel and are solely making the wide channel basketballs. Wide channel balls offer a better grip but there are still some people who prefer the narrow channel.
There are also training basketballs:
The training basketballs can have sizes that range from 33 1/2- 36″ or weights from 2 lbs to 4 lbs. These help with shooting, rebounding, and muscle memory.
Basketballs can differ on price depending on what they are made out of, their size, their manufacturer, and where they are purchased. Now that you know what kind of basketballs are out there, choosing the one for you should be pretty simple.
To purchase the ball you require or for more basketball products go to www.morleyathletic.com
