A basketball player should eat healthy not just for the game but for his overall health. But since the sport burns a lot of energy, players should eat more foods that contain the right nutrients that will give him the energy to sustain his fuel requirement - but still balanced to attain optimum use.
There are 2 basic food groups that a basketball player should eat: protein and carbohydrates.
Proteins - are the building blocks of the body which is responsible for paving the increase of strength and muscle mass through exercise. Protein is found in fish, eggs, dairy products, milk, and meat. There are also kinds of vegetables that are rich in protein. These are leguminous plants or plants which grow on the vine or climbing pea or bean such as peanuts, soya, and asparagus. Protein should supply 10 percent of our energy needs.
Carbohydrates - are essential for the functioning of our brain. Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. They are often found in foods such as rice, bread, potatoes, pasta, fruits, honey, jam, and pulses. Carbohydrates should supply 50 percent of our energy needs however, since a basketball player requires more fuel to keep him in the game, some sports nutritionists require players to have 70 percent carbo diet.
As always, fat is needed but should be minimized.
Before the game…
Eat at least 1 hour before the game. This gives the body ample time to digest the food before using it during the game. It is suggested that the player should eat lots of carbohydrates to store energy.
During the game…
Players aren’t often seen eating during the game but most people don’t know about this: eating a bananna during the game helps players to replenish lost energy quickly. Regularly drinking fluid during the game helps the player to bring back the water he has lost from the game.
After the game…
After the game, the player should eat protein, then carbohydrates. This is because protein helps facilitates carbohydrate to replenish the storage chemical of the cell of the body called glycogen. Glycogen stores glucose, an important component in metabolism. Without these two, the body won’t regain the energy that is lost from the previous game and will contribute to mental and physical fatigue.
Take note that protein and carbohydrates aren’t the only requirements of a player. He should also exercise to help keep his body healthy and fit.

Ally White asked:
NBA Philadelphia 76ers’ has found the missing part of the puzzle, the team has finally signed a one-year contract with the unrestricted free agent forward Donyell Marshall. Marshall who is a NBA veteran turned pro in 1994 and has played for teams like Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and Seattle Supersonics.
The 76ers’ president Ed Stefanski is just incredible pleased with the inclusion of Marshall to the team whose contract include a minimum salary of $ 1.26 million for a player who has been for more than a decade in the NBA.
“Donyell Marshall has proven time and time again his value as a player in this league,” Stefanski said while announcing the news. “We believe his ability to stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting will prove to be a great asset for our team and we look forward to having him back home in Philadelphia.”
Marshall started his basketball career playing at Reading High school then received a scholarship at the UConn with the Huskies. After been in college, Marshall dropped during his junior year and was drafted as the fourth pick overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by Minnesota. After several months he was later traded to the Golden State Warriors were he had a great rookie season. Donyell Marshall played for the Warriors for five seasons until he was traded to the Utah Jazz.
After his two years with the Jazz Marshall decided to become a free agent, this led him to later on sign a contract with the Chicago Bulls. By 2005 he signed with Cleveland for a four year contract but in recent days it was announced he had the permission to sing with any team reason why Marshall accepted the offer made by the 76ers.
Amongst some of Marshall’s career averaging stats we find 12.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and one block per game. Besides his averaging career high of 16.2 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks during the 2003-2004 season with the Toronto Raptors.
Now that the 76ers count with Donyell Marshall the team expect to get to the playoffs again as they did last year. Donyell is a remarkable forward and a great three point shooter as well as a strong forward in defense and offense, and the most important thing he has its experience over the years he has played in the NBA.
Any team in the NBA needs a veteran; someone who the younger players can look up too and Marshall’s 14 NBA seasons become a very solid background for the player, Marshall is the perfect fit for the Sixers. The 76’ers fans, the franchise and coaches hope to see Marshall guiding the team and playing to his best this season and hopefully getting to the eastern conference finals. Other players the 76ers have signed for the coming season are: free agent guards Kareem Rush and Royal Ivey as well as forward Elton Brand.

One very important aspect about any sport, not just basketball is continual growth and development.
When you are not growing you are doing the opposite… Dying!
Successful basketball players and those who aren’t achieving their dreams are different.
And most of the time it has nothing to do with ability or talent. Ask yourself a simple question?
Do you think there is some baller out there that is way better then some guys in the league, but he is stuck somewhere working at a food restaurant or something?
I know of at least a dozen of them!
But why is this so?
Did they make a bad decision, made a wrong move, or didn’t play their cards right?
All of these could be true, but from what I have found, these are not the main causes. The main cause of basketball failure is a lack of growth!
What kind of growth? Personal growth.
As I stated earlier, if you are not growing, you are doing the opposite of growing.
You see successful, dominate ballers have formed habits of doing things they do not like doing.
Let’s read that again.
You see successful, dominate ballers have formed habits of doing things they do not like doing.
Everyone has the bad habit of being lazy, even successful basketball players. But successful ballers have formed the habit of doing the things that will benefit them even when they are feeling lazy.
Successful ballers focus solely on results, and unsuccessful ballers focus solely on the process of those results.
Here is an example:
A baller who has formed the habit of doing things even when they do not want to, and focuses just on the results will go wake up at 6 in the mourning and work on their game with the intention of playing pro basketball.
The result (playing pro basketball) is the fuel and drive they use to achieve their dreams or goal.
A unsuccessful basketball player will not get up at 6 in the mourning and will look at the process of becoming a pro baller, (competition, chances, odds, how, obstacles, lack of resources, commitment etc…)
And hence they will never get tot their goal, because their goal seems to be a hill they can not climb, it’s too hard, too many things to do.
They actually prevent them selves from achieving their goal!
Here is something that you can do right now and for the rest of your life to ensure basketball growth.
Everyday when you wake up, or even the night before, take out apiece of paper and write down one thing that you do not want to do, but if you did would move your life, and development forward.
Then write down the benefits of completing that task (again focus on the results). By focusing on the result you will take the necessary action to get the job done.
If you were to do this everyday for the rest of your life, your results will be amazing, and you will accomplish some of the biggest goals that you thought were nothing but a dream.
Try this for the next 4 weeks and watch=h as your game, life and everything around it becomes magical!

The father of basketball, Dr. James Naismith came up with the game in 1892 and the first game was played in Beaver Falls Pennsylvania on April 8 1893 between the New Brighton YMCA and the Geneva College. The game was very popular and by 1914 as many as 360 colleges boasted basketball teams. In 1939, the first NCAA Men’s College Basketball Championship tournament was held which was won by the University of Oregon.
The formation of Pro basketball in 1896 came about from a dispute between YMCA team members and officials and ended in the members forming a professional team that played for money. In 1898, the NBL (National Basketball League) was formed and produced the first basketball stars - Ed Wachter and Barney Sedran.
The first two professional basketball teams to achieve success were the Buffalo Germans and the Celtics but during the 1930’s favorites included the New York Renaissance and the Harlem Globetrotters. During this time, womens basketball was also popular and produced great players such as Babe Didrikson and Alline Banks Sprouse.
In 1940, the first college basketball game was shown on TV. This game was played between Pittsburgh and Fordham at Madison Square Garden, and catapulted basketball into a national sensation. Since then basketball has been one of the most watched sports and in fact the March Madness, when almost 350 American colleges compete for the NCAA basketball crown is the most watched event in the United States.
In Pro basketball during the 1940’s and 50’s the Minneapolis Lakers were a huge favorite of many winning 5 NBA championship titles and producing starts like Bob Cousy and Bob Pettit. But during the late 1950’s up until 1969, the Celtics had the court winning 11 NBA titles (8 f them right in a row). During this era favorite players included Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlin of the Philadelphia Warriors.
During 1963 to 1975 The University of California, Los Angeles was in the spotlight winning 10 national championships, including seven in a row. Some of the great players of this UCLA team include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, Bill Walton, Gail Goodrich and Marques Johnson.
In 1967 the American Basketball Association (ABA) was formed and many will remember one of the satart players Julius Erving as well as their red white and blue basketballs. The ABA only lasted until 1976 when it broke up and many of the teams joined the NBA.
In the 1960’s, womens basketball introduced the 5 player full court format and made dribbling fully legal but it wasn’t until 1985 that the Basketball Hall of Fame began inducting woman coaches and players. Some of the first women to get this honor include Carol Blazejowski, Ann Meyers, Cheryl Miller; Nancy Lieberman-Cline and Anne Donovan.
In the late 1970’s start players like Larry Bird of Indiana State University and Michigan State Universities Magic Johnson emerged and the late 1980s saw such major players as Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman. But perhaps the most beloved player of all is Michael Jordan who led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in the 1990s.

Do you want to know a little secret? NBA basketball betting can make you a lot of money. NBA basketball is a game that has helped turn sports betting losers into happy sports bettors with larger bankrolls. It’s really no secret to winning sports bettors—NBA basketball is the easiest game to make money at. The game itself gives sports bettors plenty of opportunity and the ability to win right up until the end. Unlike Football, Baseball and Hockey, NBA basketball does not have limited scoring. In those other games you might see a handful—or less—of scoring executions per game. If your side gets behind too much, it’s over no matter how much time is left. However, in NBA basketball, your team is usually in the game until the end.
Think about it for a moment. If you were to bet a -8 point favorite in football and the game was tied with 6 minutes left and the other team had the ball, would you have a realistic shot at winning? The answer is probably not. However, let’s apply the same situation to an NBA basketball game and chop 4 minutes off the clock—so there’s 2 minutes left. Would you have a realistic shot at covering the 8 points? You bet! Teams must shoot the ball within 24 seconds and each made basket is worth 2 or 3 points. You would only need 3-4 baskets to make the 8 points. Granted, the other team can score too, but in the NBA, two minutes at the end of a game is an eternity when the teams are close.
Let’s look at another scenario. Imagine that it’s half time in Basketball and Football, it’s the 5th inning in Baseball and it’s the 2nd period in hockey. Which of these four following scenarios have the best outcome?
The team you bet on in Baseball is down by 6 runs. The team you bet on in Hockey is down by 3 goals. The team you bet on in Football is down by 21 points. The team you bet on in NBA Basketball is down by 22 points.
The answer, of course, is number four. Scores are hard to come by in the first three options. While comebacks happen sometimes, in the NBA, teams always go on runs. Each season is filled with games where a team was down 10,15, even 20 points and came back to win. There are many other games where the underdog was down by a lot and game back to lose by just a few points. With the NBA, you are almost always in the action right up to the end of the game. Can you say that about any other sport?
Finally, let’s talk about NBA basketball totals. You might find that betting the total points in a game (under or over) is your thing and you would not be alone. There is a theory out there that those who can get a feel for totals betting are among the most successful sports bettors alive. You could debate that theory, but it does point out a very important idea. Totals betting in NBA basketball is full of winning opportunity and the sports books don’t set them as well as the spread. Will this translate into more money in your pocket? That’s for you to decide.
If you are not on fire right now for some NBA basketball action, check your pulse. NBA basketball presents one of the greatest opportunities open to sports bettors. Don’t miss out of a great thing. Sports bettors and handicappers look forward to the NBA basketball season every year and now you know why.

SAN ANTONIO — The NBA champion San Antonio Spurs acquired guard Vassilis Spanoulis from the Houston Rockets for center Jackie Butler and the draft rights to Luis Scola.
The Spurs will also get the Rockets’ second-round pick in 2009, San Antonio said in a statement Thursday night.
Spanoulis, who averaged 2.7 points in 31 games as a rookie last year, has said he didn’t want to return to the Rockets because he was homesick and wanted to remain in his native Greece.
Butler played in 11 games for the Spurs last year, averaging 3.7 points.
Scola averaged 15.5 points, 5.9 rebound and 2.2 assists for Tau Ceramica in the Euroleague this season.
