Basketball Trampoline! Now That Sounds like Fun

Saturday 26 January 2008 @ 10:05 pm
basketball

Doesn’t a basketball trampoline sound like a lot of fun? You can usually find these trampolines available at fun plex’s and other outdoor play areas. Buying a backyard trampoline is fairly easy, but finding one that you can play basketball with can be more difficult. A true basketball trampoline is long and rectangular and shaped like a gymnastic trampoline.

Types of trampolines that you can play basketball on

The two main types of basketball trampolines are the traditional rectangle type that has a basket on each end. This type comes in a variety of models and some might even have a partition in the middle. These basketball types of trampolines are usually professional quality and very expensive.

The other type of trampolines for sale that might be offered at a better price are regular round trampolines that have a basketball attachment. They are an enclosed trampoline similar in style to a regular kids trampoline but you can play basketball on them.

These regular trampolines can be called a rebounder or fun jumper as well. You will find these for sale at a variety of retail store, but you may have to purchase the basketball accessory separately.

Pricing

The sale price of your trampoline is an important aspect of your purchase. You don’t want to spend more money buying trampolines than you have to. Shop around and look for the best price when you buy a trampoline. Don’t settle for the first store that offers the type of trampoline that you are looking for. Instead keep a log of the prices at different stores and even consider looking online for a better price.

Using the Internet to your advantage

The Internet is a great place to find good deals on trampolines of all types and you can often get specials for discounted and free delivery. If you are interested in a large basketball type trampoline the Internet may be your only source for one. You might also consider asking around at amusement parks and other similar fun places.

If you find a place that is offering trampoline basketball, be sure to ask where they purchased their trampoline. The one they own may be fairly old, but the company is likely still around and probably selling even better basketball type trampolines. Again, use the internet to your advantage when searching for a good trampoline store.

Home Models

For your home trampoline you can usually find fun basketball accessories online. Try looking at online auction places and other specialty fun stores to find the best basketball equipment for you home trampoline.

Safety

It is important to only play basketball on a trampoline that has an enclosure around it. When you are playing basketball it is too difficult to have to worry how close you are to the edge of the trampoline. By having an enclosure around your trampoline you will ensure that if you jump too high … you will still stay in the trampoline and not end up on the ground.

What type of basketball shoes are best for me?

Saturday 26 January 2008 @ 11:59 am
basketball

My style of playing is mostly on my speed and my opponents speed. To score I use quick lay ups or hook shots. Mostly I like a basketball shoe thats light, but that is my opinion. I frequently use crossovers and fake spins to get around

First off as a sophomore in high school I am in great shape and very tall. Is 3 days a week good enough for the strengh and ability I have to be in for basketball? And should I play basketball first or workout first cause i found that after i worked out today i was dead and couldnt play and my shot was horrible. What should i do?

The EuroLeague Champions played the Houston Rockets the other day and lost by 37 points.

Comments on tonight’s game with the Spurs?

How do you prevent stinky basketball shoes?

Friday 18 January 2008 @ 5:17 am
basketball

Throughout the use of my previous pair of basketball shoes, I’ve noticed a strong odor seeping from the shoes. Every time I put on the shoes, I would have to wash my fingers because of the lingering scent.

I’ve recently bought a new pair of basketball shoes and I was hoping to prevent the smelliness this time around. Any hints?

I’ve been told that since I wear low cut socks, the sweat from my feet/legs can still be absorbed by the fabrics of my shoes. As a result, would wearing higher cut socks necessarily help?

Basketball Basics: Shooting Drills

Thursday 17 January 2008 @ 4:52 am
basketball

If you are playing basketball, you want to play it excellently. Who wouldn’t want to be recognized as an outstanding basketball player?

It is just not very fortunate that basketball superstars and the best players are never born; they are created. So how can you create a basketball star out of yourself? The answer is simple: Play it right.

To be able to play basketball really well, it is important that you spend considerable time and effort in game practices. Just like any other form of sports, rehearsals, along with strict discipline and proper attitude, are necessary to make you an excellent basketball player.

However, when attending basketball practices, experts notice and warn that there are so many players who aren’t practicing their shooting skills correctly. Be informed that there are proper forms and moves in shooting.

That is why it would be helpful to you to spend time in practicing your shooting skills. There are several popular drills that would be helpful in attaining proper forms and moves when shooting the basketball to the bucket.

Some shooting drills

Proper attitude, determination and physical agility will be rendered futile if the basketball player doesn’t practice some drills. Here are some of the well-known and widely adapted shooting drills that will help you attain the proper form and skills in shooting the basketball.

Bull’s eye drill

This shooting drill is aimed at helping the player further sharpen his focus and concentration when playing. It is said that players lack focus when they fail to shoot the ball during the game. This is the practice drill for such players.  To be able to execute this drill, you will be required to use white athletic tape. Of course, the drill is executable in an actual basketball court. To do the drill, first, stick a piece of the white athletic tape on the front side, the side facing you, of the rim of the hoop.

You see that white tape? That will be your target. Now start throwing the ball into the bucket by targeting the white athletic tape. You are hitting the bull’s eye when you are successfully hitting the target. This will train your eyesight and senses in shooting the ball.

The free throw drill

This shooting drill is aimed at establishing your concentration and consistency in shooting the ball during a free throw. The process may seem too easy and less complicated, but during actual games, players complain that their focus is disrupted because of too much noise and other distractions coming from the audience and from the excitement of the game itself.

To perform the free throw drill, you must get be on a basketball court. Stand on the free throw line and start shooting free throws. Dribble the basketball three times. As you dribble, say the word ‘dribble’.

After that, it is time to throw the ball into the hoop. Say ‘throw’ or ‘set’ or whatever word you want to use to associate with the activity. Before actually throwing the basketball, envision yourself all set to shoot the ball. Then, slowly raise your arms carrying the basketball, target the range and the rim and shoot.

If the goal isn’t attained, do the drill several times. The aim of the drill is to instill the proper mental set and condition that will be associated to successful basketball throws.

The Westhead drill

The Westhead drill is actually a mental drill in basketball shooting. This drill is aimed at enhancing muscle memory, or the muscle reflexes set on specific occasions and moves.

The drill is simple and challenging to execute. The first move will be to throw the basketball into the basket five times. Then, concentrate and envision five successful basketball throws in your mind.

Shoot the ball five times again, before pausing to close the eyes and picturing a good basketball throw in your mind. Throw the ball five times while the eyes are closed. Then throw the basketball successfully for five times after the closed-eyes drill.

Take note that your muscles are becoming more and more conditioned to successfully throwing the basketball. After some time, you can modify the drill and do it while walking or running on the basketball court.

TEAM RECORD UNDER 500–NO PROBLEM IN THE NBA

Friday 11 January 2008 @ 8:36 am
NBA
Paul Mroczka asked:

In the NHL, where like the NBA a little over 50% of the teams go to the playoffs; clubs with losing records don’t come close to competing for Lord Stanley’s Cup.

This year in the NFL, where even the Wild Card teams sported a .688 winning percentage, the Kansas City Chiefs were left out of the post-season tournament after going 10-6 (.625). Major League Baseball saw the San Diego Padres win their division and earn a 2005 playoff berth with a .506 winning mark, but they were an anomaly. This season all other MLB playoff teams won 90 or more of the 162 games they played. Over the past five years 98% of the baseball teams that have been playoff bound have won 90 (.556) or more games and none have had losing records. The NBA is different.

In the 2003-04 NBA Playoffs four of the eight Eastern Conference teams that had the honor of making the second season earned records of .500 or below. In the Atlantic Division, the 8th seed Boston Celtics, one of the most winning franchises in professional sports history, touted a 36-46 (.439) record as they headed into the playoffs. At 39-43 (.476) the New York Knicks weren’t much better. In the Central Division, New Orleans and Milwaukee, 5th and 6th seeds respectively, finished at .500.

The next year no sub-500 teams were in the tournament but New Jersey, the 7th seed with a 43-39 (.524) mark, and Philadelphia, the 8th seed compiling a 42-40 (.521) record, were marginal. This year, as we approach the mid-way point of the professional hoop season, it’s clear that there’s a good chance that as many as four sub-500 teams–25% of the playoff mix–will be shooting threes and banging the boards in the post-season.

The Milwaukee Bucks, the current 6th seed, are 19- 18 (.514); the Philadelphia 76ers, which hold the 7th seed, are 18-20 (.474); and the Washington Wizards, the potential 8th seed are 17-20 (.459). Washington will probably have some stiff competition for that final Eastern Conference position from the 16-22 Chicago Bulls, the 15-23 Boston Celtics, and the 14-22 Orlando Magic.

Although the Western Conference has traditionally been exempt from this dilemma, this year is different. The current 8th seed, the Utah Jazz, is one game above .500 and there are at least three other teams–Minnesota, Golden State, and New Orleans/Oklahoma City– with more losses than wins that are in contention for that spot.

Certainly a system that’s geared towards making the league competitive has its benefits to owners, players, and fans. While teams continue to stay in the mix, this system has the potential to keep hometown fans interested. However, the system leads to inferior teams making it into a post-season where they don’t have a chance to compete.

There are a few reasons why the NBA has this problem. However the major reason is, quite simply, money. The NFL has long had a salary cap; the NHL has just instituted one; and MLB has created a half-hearted attempt at one. The theory behind an effective salary cap, such as the type the NFL and NHL have instituted, is that when teams are allowed to only spend a certain amount of money they will be forced to spend it wisely–doing their best to build a competitive team. The other way a salary cap works is that it prohibits one or two teams from paying exorbitant amounts of money to hire all of the stars, thus leveling the playing field. (This is why the MLB salary cap doesn’t really work; it doesn’t do this and is not a true cap. It’s more of a salary visor.)

Now this may surprise you– the NBA also has a salary cap. This year it’s set at $49.5 million per team. However the NBA has a “soft” cap, a headband really, which translates into numerous loopholes allowing clubs to still break the bank when it comes to salaries.

Because of how it can be manipulated, the soft cap does very little to control spending. This can have some disastrous results for teams and the league. Some teams capture that one star player with a huge multi-year deal but then, because of their own budget limits, can’t afford to support him with role-players. And if that primary guy suffers a season ending injury, the entire team’s season is over.

Others with the deepest pockets find their way around the cap and scoop up two or three hallmark names, while teams with small bankrolls don’t have the power to attract the best talent. Then there are the organizations that spend money on young talent and that talent just doesn’t pan out. If a player has a big contract and he’s not performing, he’s impossible to trade, and he still has to be paid.

The fact is a salary cap is intended to negate exactly what is happening in the NBA; a soft cap is designed to simply get around the basic provisions and safeguards a salary cap offers.

The final result is an imbalance of power, which means you may have 16 playoff positions but you really only have 12 playoff teams. The last three or four slots are filled by non-competitive teams just because the spaces are there.

This year if the Celtics or the Sixers or the Jazz or any of the other clubs hovering around .500 make the post-season will anyone consider them worthy of being potential NBA champions? There’s one of two possible solutions for the NBA–a real salary cap or going to a 12-team playoff scenario.
