Ways to Score in a Basketball Game

Monday 12 May 2008 @ 2:20 am
basketball

There are different ways to score in a basketball game. Let us learn each of them:

Jump shot – is the most common shot made at the perimeter (or the place on the court that is relatively far from the basket), also known as set shot. This is done by getting the right height before throwing the ball to the basket. It is also essential to follow through with the ball. This is done by maintaining your form while the ball is still on its way to the basket. The following through is said to increase the chance of scoring. A jump shot is often worth 2 points.

Three-point shot – is a perimeter shot taken beyond the arc (both feet of the player must not step on the three-point line). The player should possess leg and knee power to generate enough height to release the ball 20 feet away from the basket. A three-point shot often gives the team a boost and adds excitement to the game.

Free throw – A free throw is given after the opponent has committed a personal foul or a technical foul. This is an unguarded shot taken in the free-throw lane and is worth 1 point.

Dunk – is one of the most exciting shots that can be made by a player. This is done by jumping high enough to get your hands on the rim while still holding the ball. Once you reach the right height, slam the ball and grab the rim. It adds more to the excitement.

Alley oop – is a pass and shoot sequence that involves great coordination between the passer and the receiver of the ball. The ball is thrown to a player in mid air who will also shoot the ball before he touches the ground.

Lay up – is the most common shot made inside the paint. This is also the easiest shot to make. You drive to the basket, take off to get the right elevation, and lay the ball directly to the rim or off the board with one hand. The non-shooting hand is used to protect the ball from the defender.

Hook shoot – is made popular by Kareem Abdul-Jabar. This shot is done by turning your body on the side while the head is still facing the basket. You will jump off with the non-shooting leg and toss to ball with one hand similar to laying up.

Scoring in a basketball game is important to win a game but don’t forget to play defense so that you prevent your opponent from scoring more than you do.

What are Basketball Camps For?

Friday 9 May 2008 @ 1:50 pm
basketball

When we hear the word camp, the first thing that comes into mind is assembling a tent and sleeping under the starry skies. For most, it is a form of adventure in the woods or anywhere conceivable. But for teachers and organizers, this is the act of teaming up to learn about something in particular. One good example for this is basketball camps. This kind of a camp is not something like a deed of a camping.

It is a season or like a course where a teacher which is usually a coach held in the hope of training basketball fanatics and enthusiasts to become somebody worth to join important teams in different associations. Some are just for the fun of it while others are formal trainings for highly potential players in the future.

Usually, basketball camps are paid trainings although there are some that are not. Paid trainings are usually held by clubs, coaches, and top players in the industry. While those free trainings are usually held by schools, government institutions, and for-a-cause organizations. These camps are usually attended by different types of people but there are camps that make a distinction, like for example women basketball, men basketball, and kid basketball camps.

In basketball camps, there are three people most important all through the camp duration:

1. The attendees. These are the people that enroll into the program. They are usually gauge by age and sex but will depend on the organizers. If it is a paid program, there are certain requirements asked before they can enroll like fees and certifications. They also provide for their food and clothing.

If it is a free program like in school, the organizers are free to choose and the attendees are required to pass some important sifting processes. The organizers may or may not provide food and camp clothing, depending on the budget provided by the sponsoring institution.

2. The lecturers or teachers, also coaches or instructors. They are the group of innovative, aggressive, and highly skilled individuals knowledgeable of the game and of the entire course in the camp. These people are the ones who will teach and motivate as well as share valuable core attitude to the attendees. They have the pressure of ensuring that their attendees learn and become professionals after the training. It is also expected that they are the authorities in the said camp and the discipline of the entire group will depend on them.

3. The organizers. These are a group of people or entities that spearheads the entire vision and mission of a specific camp, which in this case is a basketball camp. They may be government owned or private institutions that wishes to help nurture future talents through a series of trainings or basketball camps. These can also be a group of people who wants to earn and train through promoting skills and knowledge of the game.

These three are just the basic foundation of basketball camps as well as other types of sport and non-sport camps. There are still many people who belong to backroom staffs and personnel. These are the nurses, doctors, attendants, cleaners, caterers, and many others who can be in the camp depending on the budget of the camp organizers.

In the end, the camp is supposed to train and discipline every attendee to have a winning attitude not only in the camp but after the camp.

Basketball Sports Betting: Which Way Will That Ball Bounce?

Thursday 8 May 2008 @ 5:51 am
basketball

Professional Versus College Basketball Betting

Basketball is basketball, right? Well, not when it comes to basketball sportsbetting. The fact is there is one major difference between professional and college games that greatly influences point spreads, over/unders, outcomes and basketball betting. In the NBA a win is a win but in NCAA basketball a win can be a loss if the victorious team doesn’t perform as expected or better than expected. And that fact can influence sportsbetting on basketball.

Here’s the way that it works with the pros when it comes to basketball sportsbetting. You may see a line something like this when the Boston Celtics play the Philadelphia ‘76ers:

Professional Basketball Sportsbetting Example:

Moneyline:

Boston Celtics (- 130)

Philadelphia ‘76ers (+150)

Point Spread:

Boston Celtics -21.5 (+150)

Philadelphia ‘76ers +21.5 (- 125)

Over: 181.5 (+125)

Under: 181.5 (-135)

The money line in betting on the sport of basketball works like it does in other sports. The team that’s given the negative (-) line is favored. In our example, Boston is expected to win. For this reason, if you pick the Celtics you must wager $130 to win $100. If you decide to go with the underdog, the team with the plus (+) sign, then for every $100 you placed on the ‘76ers, you’d win $150. Just like football, baseball, soccer and hockey, in basket sportsbetting if you bet on the upset and it occurs, you get a better payoff.

If you decide to wager with the point spread, then things change. Why? Well, now you’re taking points away from Boston and giving them to the ‘76ers. In doing that, the Celtics have a much tougher challenge when it comes to winning. In our professional basketball sportsbetting example if you place $100 on Boston with the point spread intact, you’ll make a profit of $150 if the club wins by 22 points or more. If you decide to go with Philadelphia and they win outright or lose by 21 or fewer points, you would make a $100 profit on a $125 wager. In basketball sportsbetting, as in other sports, the point spread changes the odds because it gives the ‘76ers an edge.

In basketball, you may also bet on the over/under. In this case, you’re wagering on the total number of points that will be scored in the game. The over/under in our game would pay $125 on a $100 bet if the total score is 182 or higher and $100 on a $135 wager if the combined score were below 182.

Our basketball sports betting example for college is similar but with some twists.

NCAA Basketball Sports betting Example:

Moneyline:

North Carolina Tar Heels (-150)

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+135)

Point Spread:

North Carolina Tar Heels – 24.5 (+110)

Wake Forest Demon Deacons +24.5 (-135)

Over: 125.5 (- 125)

Under: 125.5 (+120)

Like our professional game, the NCAA basketball sportsbetting example would play out the same regarding the moneyline, point spread and over/under. But here is the important difference.

In order to rise or maintain their position in the national rankings, the Tar Heels will need to win by around 20 points. There’s a lot of motivation for the club to score as many points as it can—to make the differential between their team and the Demon Deacons larger than expected. Why? This could impress the folks who have a vote towards the national ranking and move North Carolina a few notches higher.

When is comes to basketball sportsbetting on amateur games, you must keep in mind that the bigger the win the more impressive the club looks to those ranking them. Likewise, if they under perform and still win, or even worse, lose, then they could drop nationally. Consider this factor, amongst others, when wagering on the pros where a win is a win and on the college ranks where a weak win may hurt a club almost as much as a loss.

The Best Ncaa Basketball Coaches!

Friday 2 May 2008 @ 5:06 pm
basketball

The best NCAA College Basketball Coaches have the uncanny ability to get their players motivated for “Big” games and throughout the entire season. Here’s a list of some of NCAA basketball’s best coaches:

John Thompson- coached the mighty Georgetown Hoyas (“Hoya Paranoia”) to multiple NCAA championships, and 2 of the most dominant centers in NCAA and NBA history; Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. Coach John Thompson’s influence on the game of basketball is evident by his former player, Patrick Ewing’s induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Typically when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame and included in the realms of such great basketball talent, it’s a direct reflection of their coach, such is the case with former Georgetown University Coach and former Boston Celtic- John Thompson, one of the best collegiate coaches in basketball history. Coach Thompson’s best collegiate coaching days were in the Big East Conference against the likes of…Syracuse University, St. John’s University, Boston College, Providence College, Villanova University and Pitt University (alma mater of former NFL Dallas Cowboy- Tony Dorsett). John Thompson- Georgetown Hoyas

Dean Smith- The former University of North Carolina Head Basketball Coach has coached the like of Michael (“Air”) Jordan, James Worthy, Vince Carter, Kenny (“The Jet”) Smith, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Joe Wolf and many more! Dean Smith and his famous “4-Corner Offense” of the mid to late 1980′s was popularized by the teams including Michael (“Air”) Jordan, James Worthy, Brad Daugherty, Sam Perkins, Kenny (“The Jet”) Smith and others, symbolized by “UCLA-like” backdoor cuts and Slam Dunks by Jordan and UNC teammates. Dean Smith, a master recruiter with an extremely high NCAA basketball winning percentage-that makes for a great coach! Coach Dean Smith’s best collegiate coaching days were in the ACC Conference against the likes of…North Carolina State University, University Maryland, Duke University (Alma Mater of Phoenix Suns Guard- Grant Hill), Wake Forrest University (Alma Mater of San Antonio Spurs Center- Tim Duncan & New Orleans Hornets Guard- Chris Paul), University of Virginia (Alma Mater of former NBA player- Ralph Sampson), Florida State University (Alma Mater of Heisman Trophy winning Quarterback- Charlie Ward, who starred for the NBA’s New York Knicks, with teammates Patrick Ewing, Chris Childs, John Starks, Charles Oakley, and Anthony Mason), and Clemson University (Alma Mater of former teammate of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls- Horace Grant). Dean Smith- North Carolina Tar Heels

John Cheney
- The former NCAA basketball coach of the Temple University Owls (Alma Mater of the great Bill Cosby ‘Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids’, was famous for his early morning basketball practices! Coach John Cheney was also famous in NCAA basketball for winning! His Temple University basketball teams dominated the Atlantic 10 conference, year-after-year. Past players include; Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie. Coach Cheney is also noted for his extraordinary recruiting ability, especially in the inner cities. Last but certainly not least… similiar to Coach John Thompson, Coach Cheney has produce many college degrees, which is very often an attribute of NCAA basketball coaches that is not given credit! Coach John Cheney’s best collegiate coaching days were in the Atlantic 10 Conference against the likes of…UMass (John Calipari), University of Rhode Island (Lamar Odom), LaSalle University (Alma Mater of my former Junior College Basketball Coach at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon- Verick Cutler), and St. Bonaventure (Alma Mater of Former NBA “left-hander” and Milwaukee Bucks Center- Bob Lanier). Coach John Cheney- one the NCAA basketball’s great coaches. John Cheney- Temple Owls

And on top of it all, stands his fromer center (Lew Alcindor), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer! Coach John Wooden has books which can be found in local libraries as well as Barnes & Noble Book Stores! He was one of the greatest coaches of college basketball history! Coach John Woodens’s best collegiate coaching days were in the then Pacific 8 Conference (now PAC-10)! Interesting Fact: John Wooden once coached high school basketball in South Bend Indiana, home of the University of Notre Dame “Fighting” Irish! John Wooden- UCLA Bruins

Adolf Rupp- the former NCAA basketball coach of the University of Kentucky, Adolf Rupp was a graduate of Kansas University (Wilt Chamberlain’s Alma Mater). Coach Rupp for whom the University of Kentucky’s Rupp Arena is named, propelled the University of Kentucky to national prominence, during the 1930′s through the 1971-72 seasons (41 seasons). Of collegiate basketball coaches with more than 500 wins, Coach Adolf Rupp had over an 82% winning percentage- the highest winning percentage in college basketball history. Today, the SEC basketball conference plays host to basketball programs such as University of Alabama, University of Arkansas, Mississippi State University, LSU, University of Florida, Ole Miss, University of South Carolina, University of Georgia, Auburn University and University of Tennessee

Jud Heathcote- the former Michigan State University Head Basketball Coach was famous for his “weave” offense and also famous for producing the likes of Earvin “Magic” Johnson- the NBA 5-Time World Champion. Other past players include Kevin Willis, Scott Skiles Shawn Respert, Thomas Kelly, Mateen Cleaves, Sam Vincent, Jay Vincent, Greg Kelser (of the “Cuff-Dunk” variety!) and many more! The national championship of Michigan State University over Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores was historical as it marked the beginning of one of the most storied player rivalries of NBA basketball history- “MAGIC” Johnson (NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers) & Larry Bird (NBA’s Boston Celtics). Coach Jud Heathcote began his collegiate coaching career at the Big Sky’s University of Montana and his coaching career was highlighted by his 1979 NCAA Basketball Championship broadcasted on NBC by Dick Enberg, in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Michigan State University Spartans were victorious over Indiana State University.

Coach “K” has coached in 10 NCAA Basketball Final Fours and won back-to-back NCAA basketball championships in 1991 & 1992. Coach “K” Court at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durahm, North Carolina, plays host to some of the most “Rockus” (aka “LOUDEST”) fans in the nation! Many of the Duke University Blue Devils fans camp out near teh stadium, during the week of big ACC Coneference games becasue of the high demand of Duke University basketball tickets. Krzyzewski is one of the wimmingest collegiate basketball coaches in history. Coach K’s former players include: Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, Bobby Hurley, Jay Bilas, Tommy Amaker, Johnny Dawkins and an endless list of former McDonald’s High-School All-Americans. Coach Krzyzewski is once of the best recruiters in college basketball.

Bobby Dye- one of the best defensive NCAA basketball coaches in NCAA basketball history. Coach Bobby Dye is an eccentric addition to my list of the greatest NCAA basketball coaches ever, because his style of ball control and hard-nosed defense was a tactical basketball approach that could be used to compete against any team in college basketball. Coach Bobby Dye had successful NCAA coaching stints at Cal State-Fullerton and Boise State University (Alma Mater of former NBA/ New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, New Jersey Nets Guard- Chris Childs, former Big Sky Player of the Year- Arnell Jones and International basketball star- Tanoka Beard, and Wilson Foster).
