Basketball Shooting: Its Vital Principles

Monday 18 August 2008 @ 7:34 am
basketball

The main objective of basketball shooting is accuracy in every release of the ball as it is aimed towards the basket. All basketball players know the importance of accuracy in basketball shooting yet only a few of them are able to do it correctly. Now there is always room for improvement. With a lot of practice and discipline, basketball shooting can always be perfected.

As a basketball player yourself, you must guard your own moves. You have to critic your own basketball shooting moves. Are you able to execute the shots accordingly? Is there more failure or success? You alone can gauge your improvement at basketball shooting. There are of course fundamentals and mechanics that you need to inculcate in yourself if you truly want to be a good basketball shooter.

The Principles of Basketball Shooting

The Mental Principle. Basketball shooting requires a great deal of psychological conditioning on your part. You need to know when it is best to shoot and how you can effectively do it despite the pressures rising on the court. Here are the affecting factors concerning the mental aspect.

Concentration. Every player should focus his attention on his attempts to shoot the ball. Through constant practice, you will be able to exert enough concentration although there is distraction around you. To achieve concentration, you’ve got to learn how to relax even if an opponent is trying to advance towards you.

Confidence. Your guts will speak highly of you. If you fully trust your ability in shooting, you can end up doing it flawlessly. If you are attacked by the lack of confidence, you could mess up the entire game.

The Physical Principle. Aside from the mental factor, the physical aspect counts a lot in the game of basketball. Here are the important factors that you’ve got to arm yourself with.

Establishing the target. This refers to your keenness in eyeing your target despite the commotion thrown by the roaring audience or by the varying movements on the court. You have to focus your eyes to where the ball is and who has the ball at the moment.

The body balance. Body balance means that you can easily concert your muscle efforts. The concept of ball control comes in as well.

Force generation. All of your body parts will be used during the game. Therefore, you’ve got to will yourself to synchronize the forces that you can gather from your shoulders, back, legs, arm muscles, and the likes.

Basketball shooting is relatively important in the game as this determines how your team will score and whether or not you will succeed in winning.

Basketball – Bundesliga – 43rd German’s Basketball Season Begins

Monday 18 August 2008 @ 7:12 am
basketball

The 43rd season of the German Basketball-Bundesliga (BBL) begins next Saturday, September 20th. The BBL was founded in 1966 and was divided in two groups: the north and south, only nine years later the two groups were united. The 1st League in Germany is organized by the 1994 founded Veltins Basketball Bundesliga GMBH and contains 18 teams since 2006.

In the past years, the German Basketball League gained more and more credence and appreciation. Due to the active exchange of players with the US-American National Basketball Association (NBA), the BBL is now known all over the world. In this coming up season, we will see at least four foreign professional players. The 27-year-old Casey Gardner Jacobsen will start playing at the reigning German Champion ALBA Berlin. The Shooting Guard and small forward passed last year’s season with the Memphis Grizzlies. Jacobsen started his professional career in 2002 and played one season in Germany with the Brose Baskets Bamberg which in this season became German Champion for the second time. Will he be able to bring his current team the title as well?

Along with Jacobsen we will also get back the Newcomer of the year 2006, Je‘Kel Foster. After he played last season with the French club Paris Levallois, he will now join the German team EWE Baskets from Oldenburg. Foster was not only Newcomer of the year but he was also appointed into the All-Star-Team.

The first game of this year’s season reminds us of the last game of the past season because the two teams from ALBA Berlin and Artland Dragons will face each other again. With eight German basketball championships, five triumphs at the BBL-Cup and the victory at the Korac Cup in 1995, ALBA Berlin counts as one of the most successful clubs in the German basketball history. At the last coming together of the two teams, ALBA Berlin won over the reigning cup winner with a final score of 69:84 at the Artland-Arena in Quakenbrück.

The German Basketball League does not only gain on new talents but also has to say good bye to some of their players which are switching to the NBA. After only one professional basketball year, Berlin‘s master Bobby Brown will play for the Sacramento Kings. The 24-year-old started his career with the College Basketball team of the California State University in Fullerton. ALBA Berlin‘s coach Lika Pavicevic is very proud of the international interaction of the players who play at BBL.

With a total of 265 transfers the German Basketball League moves just under the level of the past two years (2006: 275; 2007: 269). This has not always been like that because four years ago the former regulation of a limit of transfers has been abolished. The most transfers has been recorded for the former champion Köln 99ers (12 new arrivals) and for the Eisbären Bremerhaven (11 new arrivals).

As it was done in the past seasons there will be several awards in different categories this season as well. The chosen ones are elected by the fans, coaches and media representatives. Next week the American John Bowler will be awarded as the most likable player of the season 2007/2008. Further awards are most valuable player, best offensive player, best defensive player, Topscorer, Newcomer of the year, Rookie of the year and Coach of the year.

The history of basketball sportswear over the past century shows the advances made in fabrics and the understanding of biomechanics. These changes also provide a glimpse of changes in fashion as a whole. At beginning of the 19th century society was very conservative; men’s wear included tailored suits with bowties, while women’s dresses were floor-length and incredibly tight at the waist. Such attire was hardly appropriate for sports, but the earliest athletes wore modest styles. Nineteenth century players sported long sleeveless t-shirts, baggy breeches that came below the knee, ankle socks, and low-top, inflexible leather shoes. By the 1920s, fashions on and off the playing field became much less conservative. Basketball sportswear now included medium-length cotton shorts; cotton t-shirts with cap sleeves, and tight leather booties.

At the end of World War II, athletes began to show some skin. Uniforms from the late 1940s comprised extremely short cotton shorts, thin-strap cotton tank tops, ankle socks, and shoes similar to low-top Converse.  Then in the 1960s synthetic fabrics became the norm and the development of the modern basketball sportswear uniform took place.  The basketball sportswear team uniform is always changing, but the basic materials haven’t changed since the 60′s. The 1980′s brought some color changes. The changes in color were slight, but they ranged from lights to darks, the neutrality or a softer tone.

The last decade or so has seen another change in basketball sportswear; jerseys tend to hang looser, shorts also hang low. In the next decade, who knows what to expect- as technology changes new looks will now be possible.  Even now you have the ability to design your own basketball sportswear uniform. We all have different styles, whether we are dressing to impress or dressing to make a statement, there is always a rhyme or reason behind what clothes we wear. Basketball sportswear can differ based on the color, fit, comfort level or simply the style and outside appearance of the material. Fashion has become a foundation of opportunity, fame and fortune for many designers, fans and buyers. Dressing by season and whether has become a trademark amongst the most fashion sensitive individuals and will continue to play importance in the fashion world in the future. The owners of Basketball sportsweardesigner.com have a long history of success. In addition to this basketball sportswear company they have brought an Internships website, an SEO Real Estate company, and a business plan software tool to the market.

Dice Sports Games That Are Fun: The Pro Basketball Dice Game

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 6:32 pm
basketball

This an introduction into a world of incredibly fun sports games played with dice. In this lesson you are going to learn the Pro Basketball dice game. Before you begin you will need eight dice, notebook paper and a pen or pencil to play Pro dice basketball.

In all of our dice games you have to make a box score sheet that had two boxes split in half. These two halves represented the home team and the visitors. The visitors always rolls first in dice pro basketball.

In the pro basketball version of dice basketball there are actually four quarters per team. Equally, in the pro basketball game, the visiting team always goes first in all four quarters.

Scoring is pretty simple. Each team gets to start their first quarter by rolling all of the eight dice once. Once rolled, count up the total of the top six dice results; which would represent how many points were scored in the quarter. As an example let us assume that the visiting team rolled the following dice totals; 4, 3, 1, 6, 5, 6, 1, 2. In all, these total 28 points.

The player would then remove the two lower dice results (the two 1′s) which would leave the player with 26 points. At most, six dice would total a maximum 36 points in a quarter; which is a much better total than the normal quarter; in terms of pro basketball. However, one would have to roll six dice that all hit sixes in order to get to 36 points in a quarter.

Now the home team gets to strike back. Their dice totals result with; 2, 3, 3, 4, 1, 6, 4, 5. This equals a total of 28 points. Now the home team removes the 1 and 2 which gives them a new total of 25 points. Thus the first quarter of the basketball game ends with the home team losing by a score of 26 to 25.

The Visitor’s team always go first in each quarter. So let us say that in the second quarter the visitors roll the following; 5, 6, 5, 3, 3, 5, 6, 1. That is a total of 34. The visitor subtracts the 1 and 3 which results in a second quarter total of 30. The visitor adds the previous 26 to the 30 and is sitting pretty with 56 first half points.

The Home team responds with a roll of 2, 6, 4, 5, 6, 5, 5, 1, for a total of 34 points. Then they subtract the 1 and 2 which leaves them with a dice total of 31 points! When they add the 31 to their previous 1st quarter total of 25 we see that they have a total halftime score of 56 points. An excellent half of basketball, but can they break the tie and win? Well, that’s why you play two halves.

Now if a game ends in a tied score then both teams play an overtime quarter. For overtime, both teams roll only six dice and then remove the two lowest dice. Again, if the score ends in a tie then you just keep playing overtime quarters until a winner emerges.

Handicapping Pro Basketball dice games can be a snap. Let us say that you have the Home team advantage. How this advantage can be enacted is to allow the Home team to get re-rolls on all 1 dice rolls. The Visitors will not get to re-roll any of their dice rolls. This handicapping can be fun if you have several teams in some sort of tournament set-up.

Try it and see for yourself what fun tournament play is. That’s especially true when some underdog team unexpectedly knocks-off a favorite.

Till then, keep on rolling.

Descriptions of the Different Basketball Positions

Saturday 9 August 2008 @ 4:27 pm
basketball

An organized basketball game is played with 5 players on each side. And each player has his own task to do during the game both on offense and on defense. Here are those:

Point Guard.

The point guard is usually (but should not necessarily) the smallest player on the floor since size is often equated to quickness and agility. The point guard brings the ball down the court and creates play for every possession. For this reason, he is referred to as the extension of the court on the floor. Other characteristics that a point guard should have are: good ball handling and dribbling skills, good passing skills, good defender, and good outside shooter. Some of the popular point guards on the NBA today are Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Tony Parker.

Off Guard

Off guard is also referred to as the shooting guard since he is the one who is expected to score the most. Shooting guards must know how to complete the offense, have the skill to shoot the ball from all points on the floor, know how to read his teammates movements, and know how to move without the ball being open and receive a pass. Off guards are often the most popular players on the team. Some of the most popular NBA off guards include Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Reggie Miller, and Tracy McGrady.

Small Forward

Small forward or the number 3 player is often considered as the most versatile position in the game since they show quickness and must posses considerable side. Forward equates to power and small with speed and shooting ability. NBA’s best small forwards are LeBron James, Grant Hill, Scottie Pippen, Shawn Marion, Tayshaun Prince, Larry Bird and Julius Erving.

Power Forward

Power forwards are often good defenders since they are expected to come up with the ball off the bounce. They possess size and power which give them the advantage to defend their territory or give picks to their point guards to make better play. The power forward position has been revolutionized recently and has been more acknowledged as an offensive threat with NBA players such Carl Malone, Ben Wallace, Kevin Garnett, and Dirk Nowitzki.

Center

A usual NBA center stands on the average of 7 feet tall, the tallest player on the team. The center defends part of the court close to the basket and is expected to come up with the ball off the rebound. NBA centers include Yao Ming, Shaquille O’Neal, and Brad Miller.

Basketball Dribbling: Pointers That You Ought to Keep in Mind

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 3:14 am
basketball

Basketball dribbling is hailed to be among the most significant skills in playing the game. The most famous basketball players today are really good at dribbling. The skill doesn’t come out naturally though. One needs to hone his skills in basketball dribbling and it means getting the proper training plus the factor of both the arm and leg power. Basketball dribbling requires you to remember the common mistakes made by almost everyone who lacks the practice and to of course do what is supposed to be done.

The Common Mistakes in Basketball Dribbling

One of the ordinarily committed mistakes by people in basketball dribbling is by trying to handle the ball with the palm. In truth, basketball dribbling should be done with the use of the fingers. It follows that your fingers and hands should be equipped with enough strength so that sufficient force will cause the ball to be dribbled. The first thing that comes with dribbling practice is training the fingers to be strong. It is also vital that you can use your right and left hands when dribbling or else your opponent will easily grab the ball.

Another mistake that is committed is dribbling near the opponent. When dribbling, you have to do it using your hand which is farthest from your opponent. This will then let your rival experience extreme difficulty in grabbing the ball from you. If you really know how to execute basketball dribbling properly, you are able to be unpredictable in throwing in the defenses.

Then, you have the mistake of focusing your eyes on the ball as you dribble. This will hinder your entire grasp of what is happening around you. While doing the dribble, you should be focused on every little thing that happens on the court so you can properly engage your defenses.

Some Useful Tips in Basketball Dribbling

Keep your head up and your eyes on the court when dribbling.

Remember to be protective of the ball.

Always let the ball bounce hard from the floor.

Do some take offs when attempting a basketball dribbling move.

Use both of your hands when dribbling.

Basketball dribbling is a skill that can be practiced and enhanced. If you have the dream of becoming a great dribbler, you have to take time and practice the pointers that will improve your basketball dribbling moves.
