Fun, Amusing, and Amazing Facts in Sports

Thursday 10 September 2009 @ 9:41 pm
by Alexander G. Ross

Sports fans love to brag about their trivia knowledge. Many of the facts out there are pretty commonplace, almost shameful if you don’t know them. Whether it’s Babe Ruth’s career home run total, Michael Jordan’s jersey number, or anything else like this, they’ve become a part of pop culture.

Here are some more that may interest you. They cover all sports, and some of these are simply amazing. There’s no doubt that you’ll be pretty surprised by some of the things that you see.

For example, Duke Farrell, a former professional catcher, once threw out 8 men trying to steal a base in one game. Might as well have credited him with the win, that’s 8 outs he caused and 8 potential runs he saved.

During a 1966 tennis match between Rodger Taylor and Wieslaw Gasiorek at the Kings Cup, a total of 126 games were played between the two. Eventually, officials insisted upon a draw.

Many players in recent years have served above 130 MPH, a few above 140, and a select few above 150, but Michael Sangster of England served 154 MPH in 1963, all done with a wooden racquet.

The longest rally in tennis history occurred between Howard Kinsey and R. Roark. This rally lasted for 78 minutes and spanned 2001 shots. Eventually, the rally ended because Kinsey had to give someone a tennis lesson.

The longest drive in the history of golf was hit by a British man by the name of Edward Bliss in 1913. He was only 182 pounds at the time, and more impressively, was just 50 years old. This drive went 445 yards.

Bill Veeck, former owner of the Cubs, hired midgets to serve food in the stands. His reasoning was that no fans would have their views of the field blocked.

Jack Robinson, a golfer with one arm, amazingly hit two holes in one during a four day period on the same course.

In ancient Japan, there were contests held on a weekly basis to see who could fart the loudest and the longest. How’s that for a weird sport?

The Olympics in ancient Rome were played by completely nude athletes. No one wore anything at all.

Landing Carlos Arroyo: Boston or Chicago?

Thursday 10 September 2009 @ 2:49 am
by Louis Matthews

Earlier this year, we watched the beginnings of a battle brewing between the Celtics and the Bulls. The two franchises played during the first round of the NBA playoffs for an unforgettable playoff round, forcing 7 overtimes in seven games, and the spark was there.

It was a showdown centered around the generals of the floor. The Celtics possessed Rajon Rondo, in his third season , averaging nearly a triple-double each night and carrying a Boston franchise hurt by physical issues and forced to go small. The Bulls had Derrick Rose, in his rookie season, undergoing a critical series in the formative seasons of his career. A rookie surrounded with experienced players, Rose played with poise beyond his age.

Currently, 4 months have gone by, and the two teams nonetheless maintain a rivalry with respect to their point guards.

The man at hand is Carlos Arroyo. The 30-year-old career second-string guard played 8 years in the American basketball scene between 2001 and 2008; he next jumped ship and shipped off to Israel, getting a one-season gig with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Presently, after a season somewhere else, Arroyo wants to return the NBA.

The Celtics are the logical team for Arroyo. The C’s are presently devoid of a qualified bench for Rondo at point guard — and following 2 seasons of acquiring one in midseason (first Sam Cassell in ’0 , then Stephon Marbury this former season), they can basically use a year-round solution. The franchise has purportedly agreed to conditions with Marquis Daniels, however Daniels is more of a swingman-type than a point guard. He is not quite the answer.

Arroyo is a worthy fit. He’s rather inexpensive, he tries hard on both ends of the court, and he would be more than happy as a bench on a first-class franchise. He’s done it before — he backed up Mark Jackson in Utah, Chauncey Billups in Detroit, as well as Jameer Nelson with the Magic. He does not require a starting gig to be happy in the NBA — he’ll just go for minutes whichever way he might obtain them.

It seems that Arroyo is in negotiations with the Celtics regarding becoming the newest backup for Rondo.

Except, of course, the Bulls snag him away beforehand.

Rajon Rondo, an NBA Star

Wednesday 9 September 2009 @ 12:21 pm
by Barry Hankast

Many of today’s top athletes were born in 1986. Rafael Nadal, Tim Lincecum, and others come to mind. Many more big names will soon emerge.

Rajon Rondo was born on February 22nd, 1986. He was born in Louisville, KY, and raised by his mother Amber. Rondo grew up without a father, though he does have two brothers. One is William and the other Dymon.

Rajon attended Eastern High School in Louisville for three years. In his junior year, Rondo averaged 27.6 ppg, 10 rpg, and 7.5 apg. He and high school coach and mentor Doug Bibby still have a very close relationship. For Rajon Rondo’s senior year, Coach Bibby sent him to Oak Hill Academy so that Rajon could play against a better competition.

Nearing the end of Rondo’s high school career, he was named to the McDonald’s All-American team in 2004. He also participated in the 2004 Jordan Capital Classic Game where he put up 12 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. However one of Rondo’s greatest games was when he dished out 31 assists in one game which is two shy of the all time national record.

While he originally intended to go to Louisville for college, Rondo decided at the last minute to attend the University of Kentucky. Rondo made his mark very quickly on the Kentucky basketball team.

During his short two years with the Kentucky Wildcats, Rajon Rondo established himself as one of the best players in the nation. One memorable game saw Rondo, a point guard, grabbing 19 boards. NBA scouts were impressed, and his time had come.

Rajon Rondo was selected 21 overall by the Phoenix Suns. He finished off his rookie campaign by being selected to the NBA All Rookie Second Team. He was then traded to the Boston Celtics along with Brian Grant. Rajon is now starting at point guard along with two all stars and an MVP. Not intimidated by this, Rondo is thriving and delivering almost on a day to day basis. He had 16 assists against th Bobcats on February 28, 2008 which was his career high. He pulled down 14 rebounds against the heavy rebounding spurs. The numbers go on.

The storied career of Rajon Rondo will continue to tell itself. This is only the beginning for the young point guard, and the best is yet to come.

NBA to Limit Use of Twitter

Monday 7 September 2009 @ 2:53 pm
by Ryan Lacioca

Everyone with an internet connection knows that Twitter has exploded over the course of the last year. What was once a service popular in tech-savvy circles is now a major force in pop culture, with celebrities using the service left and right.

One set of celebrities using the service religiously happens to be NBA athletes. NBA players love the service, and the widespread use of Twitter by Shaquille O’Neal has prompted many other players to use the service themselves.

They’ve become so active, in fact, that the NBA is considering a set of guidelines that limits the use of Twitter during game time situations, similar to that which the NFL has done as well.

The NFL currently limits any use of Twitter, Facebook, or any other social media device during any instances that occur between the 90 minutes before the beginning of a game, and the end of press conferences after a game.

David Stern, the commissioner of the NBA, reassures us that none of this is too significant and anything they put into place will hardly be noticed. NBA players’ association officials, however, are worried that conflicting policies between the league and specific teams could cause confusion.

The use of Twitter has been widespread in the NBA, and the content often newsworthy. For example, on one occasion last season, Kevin Love of the Timberwolves announced via that Kevin McHale had been fired before any major media outlets reported the news.

Players like Michael Beasley have used it in more controversial manners, as Beasley recently allegedly posted pictures of bags of drugs, shortly before he was admitted to rehab.

Regardless of its drawbacks, there are many reasons for NBA lovers to embrace the benefits of Twitter. The league realizes this, and will most likely arrive at a fair set of rules that satisfies both teams and fans.

All About Dwyane Wade

Monday 7 September 2009 @ 12:38 pm
by Alexander Regrand

Dwyane Tyrone Wade Jr. was born on January 17, 1982. He currently plays for the Miami Heat in the NBA. His nicknames are Flash and D-Wade. Wade was named 2006 Sportsman of the year.

Wade has a huge fan base that extends well above and beyond those who like the Miami Heat. Fans of all teams seem to love Wade and his explosive style of play. In fact, from 2005 through 2006, more Wade jerseys sold than Kobe jerseys, LeBron jerseys, or those of any other NBA player.

Wade was part of a very talented rookie class that included the likes of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and others, but Wade has never disappointed the Miami Heat. Right out of the gates, he became the team’s leading scorer and was largely responsible for their first ever NBA title in 2006.

Wade played on the bronze medal-winning 2004 US Olympic team with fellow NBA All-Stars Tim Duncan, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony. Wade was also a member of the 2008 Olympic “Redeem Team”, where he helped the US in its quest to recapture the gold medal in Beijing.

Wade is a unique guard in the sense that he can play both shooting guard and point guard. His versatility allows him to do this. He’s one of the fastest ball handlers in the league as well.

Wade led the NBA in scoring during the 2008-2009 season after an injury-ridden 2007-2008 campaign. He also led the Heat back to the playoffs last season.

Few players in the NBA shoot free throws better than Wade does, and few players get to the line more often than he does. He’s not afraid to take the ball straight to the hoop, and this brings him many free throw opportunities.

Wade has a wife (Siohvaughn) and two young children, Dwyane Jr. and Zaire. His wife dates all the way back to his childhood.

Iverson is Bad Fit With Clippers

Saturday 5 September 2009 @ 3:58 pm
by Luke Maretti

Everyone remembers AI’s infamous practice quote, but do people remember he is fifth all time in points per game. Personally I think he got a bad rep last year just because Billups and the Nuggets performed way above expectation. AI didn’t get along with his Pistons teammates but when has animosity distracted him from performing in games? Never.

He doesn’t have to get along with his teammates or coaches. Look at his time in Philly with Larry Brown, where the two were constantly at each others’ throats. Amidst the chaos, Iverson still strung together 30+ points per game and brought his team into the finals.

While he’s in the twilight of his career, Allen Iverson is still a fast player in great physical shape. He’s one of the better scorers in basketball and his drive to succeed as a player hasn’t faded a bit.

Now the rumors have Iverson ending up in Los Angeles, as a Clipper. I’d really hate to see this happen. He just seems like he’d cause a logjam, as Baron Davis and Eric Gordon both do everything a team would want in Iverson, and they do it better at this point.

Marcus Camby would occupy the paint himself, since Iverson, Davis, and Thornton play absolutely no inside defense. Additionally, Eric Gordon would take a hit in terms of minutes, which probably isn’t a great idea.

As a Clippers fan, I really don’t want to see this happen. Iverson belongs with a contender (we in LA absolutely won’t contend this year), and only has a few years remaining in his career. He should play somewhere where he can win.

Maybe the Knicks, even. New York loves to go after guys like Iverson, and it’d be interesting to see AI and Nate on the floor together, to say the least.

I know New Orleans is not in the pursuit for AI but I actually think it would be a perfect match. The Hornets really dont have a serviceable 2 guard. We have already seen how potent the Hornets can be with Paul and Pargo. AI would be Pargo on steroids. Tyrone Lue better not sign with whichever team AI goes to or else Lue will be seeing tons of Iverson’s fury.

The Life of Boston Celtic Rajon Rondo

Wednesday 2 September 2009 @ 8:25 am
by Roger Chatham

Many of today’s top athletes were born in 1986. Rafael Nadal, Tim Lincecum, and others come to mind. Many more big names will soon emerge.

1986 was also the year that Rajon Pierre Rondo was born. He was born on February 22 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was raised by his single mom, Amber Rondo. Rajon also grew up with two brothers, Dymon, and William.

Rajon Rondo was one of the best high school basketball players in the state of Kentucky, and probably the best for that matter. He attended Eastern High School in Louisville, and guided by his coach Doug Bibby, achieved a great level of success during high school. Bibby advised Rondo to transfer schools during his senior year so that he could play more competitive high school basketball.

Rondo went so far as being named to the All-American high school team in 2004. During the All-Star game, he scored 12 points and stole the ball four times. While this was a memorable game, the real standout game for Rondo occurred during one game where he ended up with an amazing 31 assists.

Rajon Rondo committed to Kentucky after originally intending toattend Louisville. He then went on to hit game winning shots against in state rival Louisville, South Carolina, and Central Florida. Not bad for a point guard not known for his jump shot. Rajon was then named to the SEC All Freshmen team.

He quickly emerged as a top player at Kentucky, and in one game has pulled down 19 rebounds. A point guard did this. Rondo decided to leave school for the draft after two years.

The Suns took Rondo in 2006 with the 21st pick. Rondo had a solid rookie season, and was named to the NBA all rookie 2nd team. Shortly after, Rondo was traded to the Celtics, and quickly became a major contributor to the team’s success. Ever since, Rondo has put up some very impressive averages.

Rondo’s defensive abilities, his rebounding, and his overall maturity are all rivaled by very few NBA point guards. As he matures and develops some more, there is no doubt that Rajon Rondo will prove to be one of the better point guards in the history of the league.

Free Agent Iverson Could Be ‘The Answer’ In Memphis

Monday 31 August 2009 @ 12:47 pm
by Ross Everett

Allen Iverson is one of the most high profile NBA free agents left on the market, and several teams have expressed interest in the dynamic guard. On Wednesday, Iverson sent a Twitter update indicating that the Memphis Grizzlies had made him an offer. Later that night, that information was confirmed by Memphis GM Chris Wallace.

Iverson had received the most interest from the Charlotte Bobcats and Miami Heat. Both teams have a lot of upside for ‘The Answer’-the Bobcats are coached by his Larry Brown, whom Iverson played for in Philadelphia. The notoriously hard to coach Iverson has always held Brown in high regard, and on a team struggling to find an identity he’d receive a lot of playing time and be the focal point of the team’s offense. Miami would likely use Iverson in a reserve role.

From a financial standpoint, however, there are problems with both Miami and Charlotte. The Heat is already over the salary cap, and simply doesn’t have the personnel budget to pay Iverson what he could demand elsewhere. Charlotte, meanwhile, is up for sale and for that reason under severe financial constraints. They’d likely be able to offer Iverson a short term deal with the prospect for renegotiation later, but that may not be something he’s interested in.

Memphis, on the other hand, has $3.5 million dollars of free space under the salary cap. They could easily outbid either Miami or Charlotte, and would also make Iverson the focal point of the team. While GM Wallace confirmed that they’d made a formal offer to “AI” he was mum on the specific terms:

“We’re heading into the home stretch before the season, and we have had interest in Allen all summer. We’ve been in touch on a fairly consistent basis and had dialogue with his agent, Leon Rose, since the beginning of free agency. We’ll probably add another guard at some point, but we don’t need to rush to do it.”

The enigmatic Iverson appeared in only 57 games for the Nuggets and Pistons due to injury and averaged a career-low 17.5 points per game. His reputation for infighting with teammates and coaches is as legendary as his aversion to practice. On the other hand, no one has ever questioned his talented, toughness or work ethic when the game starts. Iverson remains one of the most potent scoring threats in the sport and his willingness to play through injuries that would land most NBA players on the disabled list has made him a fan favorite. And that might be the crux of his appeal in Memphis-on a team going nowhere Iverson will put butts in the seats and get the local community excited about the Grizzles which is something that they’ve been unable to do with any regularity.
